Gotta say that I liked Where the Mountain Meets the Moon a lot more than this. I think I enjoyed the higher level of fantasy with that one, and I really liked the dynamic between the characters (and especially with the parents). The plot in Starry River moved reeeeeally slowly at first--I wasn't sure exactly where it was going for the longest time--and then a lot of the foreshadowing seemed a bit too heavy-handed. I still love the means of storytelling in both books--interspersing Chinese folklore--and I liked the way the tales came together here. And I will absolutely read any book Grace Lin writes in this fashion. It just *feels* like a luxurious read.

Dare I say this book was even more enjoyable than the first? Perhaps. This book was incredibly clever with the intertwining of characters and the stories they told. I had an inkling of who the characters were, but it was still incredibly entertaining. The characters in this book were as endearing as the ones in the first. The folklores were as whimsical as the first.

Even though this and the first book are somewhat connected, I feel they can be read out of order and still be understood by readers.

We will nee to come back to this one at another date. My 7 year old was not enjoying this one as much as the first. We will try it again when she is a little older.

Beautiful retelling of Chinese mythological stories. I loved the illustrations and the stories within the story.

Similar to Where the Mountain Meets the Moon but I enjoyed this one more. Great child protagonist, entertaining story & meaningful for children and adults. This one might have a chance.
