An agonizingly slow start in the first 150 pages resulted in a tense mafia story accompanied by an interesting and high stakes magic system. There were definitely times where I was more invested in characters or scenes and other times where I really did not care about the outcome. As the first book setting up a trilogy, it was decent. I will be continuing the series, especially since I've heard this is the weakest of the trilogy. I also listened to a few chapters on audiobook and enjoyed that experience as well, as it's a very proper noun heavy book (names and locations), so audio was easier to follow for some of the introductory chapters.

this book took me completely by surprise!! it was riveting and atmospheric and I was locked! in! the magic system and gang culture (plus the sibling’s dynamics with each other and their fellow gang members) was so unique!
