Now that I’ve finished this series, I’d say overall plot was mediocre but romance was phenomenal. I think most of us reading these books are here for the romance any how. I loved seeing the slow burn harem romance develop over the four books. This one over did the “I love you” haha but other than that the romantic arcs were super fun. The plot felt like an awkward meandering and like the author just figured it out as she went. The stalker & hired hit all were just meh to me (outside the action of tension - those were great, the reveals of who and why was the meh). I do get annoyed at the “cliffhangers” as it feels like a cheap way to force readers to pick up the next book and isn’t always necessary, but alas it works.  I enjoyed the romance enough, I’d pick up more by this author anytime I’m craving a smutty read for sure.

A dynamic and explosive ending from one series and a good introduction to the next. Tate James is definitely a new auto-buy author for me!

so this series has been a consistent 4.5 for me - just a few little things here and there that have stopped me giving them all 5 stars, but that's not to say these weren't absolutely amazing to read!

i mean let's start with the guys. archer grew on me so much in the last book and i absolutely love possessive arch. his whole 'run away i'll chase you' vibe is incredible. my ONLY thing is that i kind of think the mood change up happened way too quickly and too easily, i would've liked a bit more of a fight but it's fine i'm fine i love soft archer too much for my own good. kodiak definitely deserved more personality, i think. at times he feels a bit too much like a fourth wheel, the guy who trains them rather than a guy with his own background and story. i would've liked more of that! max, though. he's absolutely my favourite. he could do absolutely anything regardless of how awful and i'd still love him.

of course, this book ended on a cliffhanger, but i get the feeling i know exactly what's coming in the next series! the plot was just wild in this book, super chaotic and hectic but very well done. i do wish we spent more time with the stalker and the motive etc., though as i feel that was brushed over a little too quickly. other than that, this was a great read! definitely going to be reading more tate james.

TWs: gunshot wounds, blood, gore, violence, murder, explosion, ref to child abuse, physical abuse, stalking, drugging, toxic family, death, claustrophobia, ref to rape (before book), fire, alcohol cosumption, ref to cheating (before book), nightmares, incest (before book), vomiting, captivity/confinement, suicide, hospitalisation, torture, animal cruelty, animal death

Tropes/rep/themes: reverse harem, marriage of convenience, i see how they look at you, possessive men, touch her and i'll kill you, taking care/nursing to health, bdsm/chaining

My heart is full of this book and these characters! I loved this ending to a heart wrenching series of more than just morally grey characters and their story of finding love.

Critics for the beginning: Steele being shot passed way too easily in my opinion.
I mean one second there was his life hanging on a threat and the next page everything’s fine and MK is carefree and happy buying a fucking wedding dress??
I would’ve liked that these scenes took a little more time and we’d seen more about Steele fighting for his life and healing with the support of MK and the other guys.

There happened so much I don’t even know what excerpts to write about here but for me this book has again one on top. The way the murder and especially the stalker mystery dissolved was not that predictable in my opinion and in hindsight made the whole series even darker than it already was.

I loved the way the MCs relationship developed into a trusting love based on equality in every aspect.

„I never hated you. Even if you hadn't forgiven me for what I did, I'd still do everything imaginable to keep you safe. I won't stop until these threats are eliminated for good, Kate. On that you have my promise.“

„We can stay alive," he agreed, "but you deserve so much more than just surviving. You deserve to thrive, babe.“

After this ending I am thrilled to jump into Hades’s series and learn more about her character and the dynamics in Shadowgrove!
