I was excited to know that there was a sequel since I enjoyed the first book a lot. However, this one is average for me.
PLOT
After the death of Simon, someone has been trying to take his place. There was an ongoing twisted game of Truth or Dare going on in Bayview High School. Where a student will get a text from an unknown person, and they will have to respond to the Truth or Dare request, or else the dealer will reveal a dark secret of that student, which might ruin them. However, things get out of hand when someone was found dead from the game.
The book was pretty easy to get through, and I feel the slow suspense, but the revelation at the end was a big let down. I do have my suspicions on who was the real culprit; still, it did not do its justice to the build-up tension at the beginning.
I was also excited about the Truth or Dare elements, but to be honest, it was only there for like 10% of the book, and I wanted more of it. The blurb said that the book would focus on the Truth or Dare game, that's a lie. There was so much talking than action, such a shame.
There was a part that kept bothering me after the aftermath of Simon's event from the first book. Bayview High School was high alert on gossips going in the school. I was surprised that no one had spoken out about the Truth or Dare game (even our main character who thought that this is some nonsense game but choose not to speak out) and none of the adults in the school was aware of this, I find that bit a little unrealistic.
CHARACTERS
I would say that you have to read the first book before going into this one because there were a lot of references to the main characters from the first book. It was nice to see the appearance of those previous characters and get a glance at how they are coping after whatever happens in the first book. At the same time, we got to meet new characters in book two.
In book two, we follow three perspectives, Maeve, Phoebe, and Knox. I appreciate how we got illness-rep and characters with real-life issues - for example, Maeve with Leukemia and Phoebe's family issues. Other than that, I'm not as invested in these characters as much as the first book. Not to mention the romance in this book (instant-love) was pretty cringy to read. Everyone seems to be falling in love for no particular reason.
OVERALL
It is still a decent book, but the mystery wasn't what I was hoping for.
QUOTE THAT I LIKE
"Holding on to resentment is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die."
