these books are becoming a tv show so we out here!
------------------------
before anyone asks, yes I didn't read the first book because I was already spoiled on the twist, so I wasn't interested in it. a review will be coming.//
i spent thirty minutes reviewing my notes on this book, hoping i would remember something about it, and this book is so forgettable it isn't funny. so, basically to summarize, some anonymous source inspired by simon sets up truth or dare and tries to get students to participate. phoebe was the first one, and she didn't respond, and she had her truth come out of sleeping with her sister's ex-bf. her sister, emma, wasn't close to her at all, so it was a whole mess. phoebe had a thing with brandon until he was rude to her and started slut-shaming her which wasn't cool at all. i think the thing that karen m. mcmanus does well is she has an engaging writing style, so expect to have fun while reading.
the next characters to focus on was maeve and knox who used to date, (mess i know), and maeve is a cancer survivor. so maeve gets "dared" and she doesn't respond, so it is revealed that she couldn't get it on with knox which was embarrassing for him. maeve begins having a thing with this guy named Luis, who is a sweetheart. the book progresses with brandon dying doing his dare, and it's a whole mess. he fell through the roof, and knox was knocked out. we find out that brandon messed with a forklift at 13 that killed phoebe's father. this accuses phoebe of being the killer.
ending. basically it was a guy named jared and emma who made the account to get revenge, as emma found out about phoebe sleeping with her ex-bf and jared because of Eli, and he tries to bomb ashton and eli's wedding. maeve and knox save the day. anyway, the detective questions phoebe because emma chatted on the server as phoebe and when really emma did everything. she gets a lawyer and all that, and we realized she tried to stop what was going on. she wasn't quick enough. jared did the damage, and, then, we learn that after the game launched, she stopped talking to jared. however, we learn that someone chatted with jared after emma said she stopped chatting. we learn that owen, phoebe and emma's younger brother, chatted up until brandon's death. the two sisters learn that based of the misspelling of bizarre and decide to protect their brother. with the lawyer, they say that jared chatted to himself. the wedding was cute with maeve and Luis dancing, and maybe a romance between knox and phoebe.
overall, this book is kind of boring and wasn't the exciting thriller i wanted.

Wowwww! SUCH a good sequel. Enough of the original characters and mystery but in such a new way. Loved it! Usually sequels don’t stack up but it was such a good story, similar but different enough. Just so good overall.
So we follow one of the siblings of the Bayview 4 from the previous book and all her friends. It bounces around from character to character as it did in the last book. The characters are all very different, similar to last book and the Breakfast club. The problem this time is not someone dying (right away, we'll get to that). It's that someone is starting a new game, by texting everyone. Truth or Dare. Take the dare or they'll post a truth about you. Phoebe, the first one, ignores it and it's revealed that she slept with her sisters boyfriend. Her sister is pissed. There are a few dares here and there "always take the dare". Maeve (Bronwyn's little sister, from the first book) gets a truth or dare and ignores it and it's revealed that her and Knox (the other main character) broke up because he couldn't get it up (true to a point but still not needing to be shared). Knox is mad and hangs out with Phoebe.
He always cuts through an old construction site on his way to his work at a law firm. There's foreshadowing throughout the book about it being dangerous and finally we find out who died. Brandon. The guy Phoebe was making out with. He fell and Knox got hurt. But it's all suspicious. The rest of the book is them trying to figure out what is going on. A weird guy keeps coming to the diner looking for Phoebe. We think it's Emma's (Pheobe's sister) boyfriend. At the law firm, they are covering a dirty cop who framed a bunch of people and the main lawyer is getting death threats. Phoebes sister is drinking HEAVILY and gets alcohol poisoning at one point.
Knox and Maeve have made up (Maeve thought she had cancer and was hiding it so she could be normal but then she takes a test and is fine PHEW). They eventually figure out its not Emma’s ex that is looking for her it’s the nephew of the dirty cop (or something similar). They stop a bomb attack on the lawyers dress rehearsal. We eventually find out that the boy who died (Brandon) was goofing around with the forklift that malfunctioned and crushed Phoebes dad. Emma contacted this guy in a chat and bonded over the awfulness of people and made a pact, she would handle the lawyer who messed up his families life and he would handle Brandon. But when Brandon showed up dead (the guy removed a shim) Emma panicked and backed out.
At the end when all this is coming out, we discover that their brother went back in on Emma’s chat and said he was still in but they protect him.

Mmh... okay.
I think that I have come to the realisation that I don't like thrillers - I like murder mysteries. And, my taste in murder mysteries is very specific, as it seems.
Therefore, this book wasn't set up for success.
But, I'm trying to work my way through all of Karen's books (and I'm doing okay - this is my third of the five currently published, so I'm over halfway there), and I had hope for this one. And, it was... fine???
Like with One Of Us Is Lying, I found this one pretty easy to guess who the main person doing the thing was, which is always fun for me. I don't know what it is, but there is something really fun about putting together the clues and realising that you were right - you get that instant brain cell boost!
I also really liked the characters - this one follows Maeve (who we saw in OOUIL) and Phoebe and Knox (new characters) as our three POV characters, and they were all fun and diverse and interesting to read about. The characters were the main thing of this story for me, tbh and what made it interesting.
So, you may be wondering, why the three stars? Short answer, it was just fine. I didn't dislike this one by any means, but I also didn't enjoy it as much as Two Can Keep A Secret (which I gave four stars), so I landed on a three overall.
In summary, this was a perfectly fine thriller. It was a quick and easy read, and I look forward to seeing what else Karen M McManus has to offer - The Cousins here I come!

I loved this book. I don’t think it’s better than the original but definitely a great book. I didn’t see the twist coming (which I could see a bit in the first). Would highly recommend this book
