This took me like 3 years to finish and let me tell you: it wasn't worth it.

Overstuffed and bloated, (which is typical from the 80s/90s "golden age" of paperback horror novels) but well written

A big ambitious debut novel with some very well turned scenes of small scale creepiness and a finale that makes good on the slow-building horror throughout. Not as sparklingly unsettling as Klein’s short stories perhaps but much broader in scope and theme. Grand!

This is a novel that will leave a lasting impression on you.
The setting of Poroth farm was the most striking aspect for me. I will definitely be reading the short piece the novel expanded on, just for more of the farm.
I'm disappointed by the climax, not because I didn't like what happened, but because I think Klein missed an opportunity to make it as impactful as it could have been. It should have been told through Carol's perspective, not Jeremy's. Why give Carol a POV if you're not going to use it in the end? I felt her story suffered because of it.
Other than that this was a spectacular read. Nicely paced and exactly the mood I long for in my horror.

Just finished this monster. It took quite a while but it was worth every day. I know some folks enjoy quick reads with snappy dialogue and a fast plot. Hell, that is me some of the time also.
But nothing is better to me than a long, character driven story with a plot that builds and builds into something that can wreak havoc on the entire planet. That’s just what i got from THE CEREMONIES.
I’ve had the book for years (hardcover & paperback) but haven’t been able to read it until it came out in e-book format. Hopefully his collection DARK GODS will be released soon in the same way.

Quite liked most of it. Had really creepy vibes and good intrigue. However the story was dragged out too much, and in contrast the end conclusion was over in a few pages, with no follow up on how it affected all the people we followed for hundreds of pages.
