a long paragraph review never enough to describe how GOAT this book is. this is my first dostoevsky book... kata orang-orang gw kayak bundir baca ini bukannya baca yg ringan dulu, tp jujur gw gapernah menyesal TBK jadi buku pertama gw dari dostoevsky.
i’m in the middle of writing my thesis while reading it. gue gak pernah menyesal memilih untuk vacuum skripsian dan ngabisin waktu buat baca buku ini 😂 this book changing my life slowly, cara gue melihat manusia, dan jadi mengerti kalo manusia itu beragam sifatnya.
Ivan my Shayla... :(
intinya, mau gw yapping sebanyak apapun di sini, gak akan pernah cukup buat menggambarkan sebagus apa buku ini. buku ini bagus bgt bgt bgt, kalo bisa gw kasih rate 1000000/10. i’ll read another dostoevsky next time!

Absolutely loved every minute. This book is so much funnier than I was anticipating. The monastery scene actually made me cry because I was laughing so much, it was incredible. Now, that’s not to say that this book isn’t also quite tragic. There is a lot of layered pain to navigate for all involved. But it’s a brilliant journey, and I plan to read it again one day when it isn’t so fresh on my mind. Highly, highly recommend.
This may very well be the greatest book ever written.

Really excellent and worthy of its renown. Immensely challenging, but very rewarding and I’m glad I stuck with it. An unapologetically raw exploration of the varied intricacies within human morality, and the duality of atheism and theology and the muddled middle ground between the two. Obviously the language is antiquated and some of the more philosophical passages in the first half were pretty long winded and tough to get through sometimes, but most were followed up with excellently dramatic interactions that kept me engaged and wondering what would happen next. The second half was superb and well worth the amount of context needed from the first half.
I will say that if I wasn’t reading it on my kindle I would have had a much harder time finishing it. Being able quickly access definitions and explanations of words and phrases I was unfamiliar with without putting the book down and looking them up made the experience of reading this much better. The x-ray feature was also really helpful for keeping track of all the characters and their multiple nicknames, without it I definitely would have had to write them all down to keep track.

Well, it’s taken me multiple attempts over five years to finish The Brothers Karamazov, but I have (with the much appreciated help of Ed). What a weird book. It was really quite moving and shocking at times. There’s some absolutely wonderful character work in there, though this sadly doesn’t extend that much to the women. It’s a lot of farce and humour and sadness that all tied together in the end (though the trial truly dragged out). I was curious about the idea of being a Karamazov as different from the rest of Russia/humankind as sometimes it’s very distinctive (usually in a negative sense, which makes the ending strangely affecting) then sometimes not at all. I wish Ivan was more developed too as I enjoyed his attitude towards God, not wanting him to exist. The brothers’ religious beliefs were not as clearly delineated as I think I thought they were or would be and this added to the appeal. Love a bit of uncertainty and faith and weird monks. Dmitri’s vision of the devil will stay with me for a long time I think. Smerdyakov was a weird one - it felt a bit like he just spawned in and out which was a shame when there’d been some interesting characterisation early in the book. I would’ve liked more Grigory and Zosima (after he died) too.
