Dostoyevsky is brilliant, and his characters are complex and compelling. If you enjoy classics you will enjoy this book. I particularly liked his depiction of Father Zossima as a man who brings clarity to complex moral and personal dilemmas. However, I give it only 3 stars because I expect most people who read reviews I write will find it at points both dated and foreign, and will have difficulty (as I did) comprehending the subtleties of the plot and character interactions. This book is not for the faint of heart, but there is treasure to be found.

The characters are the highlight. The story developed a bit too slowly for my taste. I also do not enjoy how Dostoyevsky presents human suffering as a redemptive act.

This book follows the three sons of a "buffoon". Dostoevsky plumbs the depths of human nature; you'll see yourself, and will ponder your own motives. An engrossing story; LOTS of dialogue. This translation is excellent.
