I know this is a classic and supposedly a great book that I am supposed to appreciate properly...but, I just couldn't get into it. As I've said in other reviews, I am generally not a fan of tales from the battlefield or recounts of war strategy or troop maneuvers.

Maybe one day, when I am older and wiser, and trapped on an island with nothing else to read, I will learn to appreciate this book properly.

This novel made me think, feel, cry, question, and, above all, rage. I had to write a paper on it, and I cried through that as well. 10/10 traumatizing, but it gives a completely new perspective on World War I that I, a history major, have ever seen. I think that any person who has the power to declare war or make a decision that could lead to war should read this. I know I’ll be thinking about it for a good while.

This book is so important for our generation. I think war and battle are often romanticised in literature and media. Everyone often talks about the glory, the honour and yet you rarely hear talks of isolation or death. This book isn't a page-turner by any means, nor is it written particulary well. It's raw, it's real and that's what makes you pick it back up again. It's the story of a boy, fresh out of school and thrown into war. Faced daily with such cruelty and pain that you can no longer comprehend that civilians worry about trivial things such as what to wear. The bond that forms between soldiers and the small moments of rest are described in a manner that made me feel everything they felt. The warmth of the fire, soon to be replaced by the firing of bullets. I'm still gathering my thoughts and a bit all over the place with this book, but I think this book beautiful.
