such a compelling work on the human cost and ultimate futility of war. i really enjoyed the exchange about why they went to war, who had started it, what they were doing it for.

The power of fiction to describe reality
The only war fiction I've been exposed to have been movies - and I've watched very few of those. This is a powerful novel, and surprising to me, as the POV is from a German soldier in WWI. Several years ago I read "The Things They Carried," about a soldier's experience in Vietnam. In "All Quiet's" gruesome depictions of the horrors of war, and the narrator's recognition of the banality of war, there is a lot of similarity to the later work. This novel differs in the narrator's aching sadness and recognition that his life will never be fulfilled, even if he survives to become a veteran. This should be required reading for everyone.
