An incredibly painful but necessary book to read. I could feel the anguish in the pit of my stomach. I appreciate the author's honesty and courage to write this.

This is one of the most powerful and visceral pieces of art I’ve ever read. There’s a beauty and a stark melancholy to Remarque’s prose that serves to sharpen his message. The total devastation of war is captured with an intimacy and a baldness that cuts like a knife through butter.

The pictures and experiences painted are vivid and horrible. A scene where butterflies perch on the teeth of a skull lasts barely a sentence or two, but the effect is wrenching. The moments will stick with you, long after the last page.

It’s a bleak look at the leveling field of destruction that war is, for everyone involved but especially for the young men who fight in them. I finished the book in tears.
