Oh, this was FUN! Charles loves a murder, and this book doesn’t disappoint. A good balance of “coming to terms with being gay” + “character who isn’t afraid to be themselves even when being themselves is hard” + “some intrigue sprinkled in for plot and shenaniganry” + “it’s an mlm book but there are lesbians on the side.” Daniel da Silva you will ALWAYS be famous! And Archie is so tender-hearted despite being a burly soldier guy.

I hadn’t realised this was a sort of prequel to the Will Darling Adventures! Loved it. The villains were exceedingly villainous, the stakes high, and the resolution was well crafted.

I'm never disappointed with a KJ Charles book, especially this one set in 1901 at a country house party. I love these two characters!

okay i LOVED this. it's a very fun romance novel, but it's also a clever homage to pulp novels that leans into the pulpiness while giving you a little wink behind its back, like "isn't this ridiculous? aren't we having so much fun?" and my answer is yes! i love fun! the "mysterious happenings at an isolated country house" premise is great, and i appreciate that charles actively integrates the prejudices and class snobbery of the time period. the dialogue and character work is so deft, too. i was eating up every moment of banter and innuendo.
