I wish I had found this book when I was younger. If I had read it at a different time it so easily could have been a pivotal five star book. As it is I deeply enjoyed it but didn’t have as much of an impact. But I did have a deep nostalgic sympathy for January, as I think those of us who spent their childhoods wanting to escape to some more fantastic world will.
The proses were beautiful and perfectly captured the wistful yearning of the story. I really enjoyed the various framing devices. I think they worked well.
It’s also a very interesting take on the genre of portal fantasy that takes a modern critical eye to the genre without infantilized or dismissing the people of the past with outdated cliches. But still feels set firmly in the time and place.
Overall a really engaging story that had me utterly hooked and unwilling to put it down with powerful themes of belonging and adventure. I would definitely recommend to any avid reader who is desperate for a door out of their own life.

Books for me have always been an escape into another world. A place where I can learn about new people, meet new friends, and explore. This book is just that, an exploration and one I thoroughly enjoyed.
It celebrates imagination, the written word, and love.
