Takes a bit to get going, but the characters are great as they always are in Discworld. The pictsies are hilarious, the Big Bad is creepy and instills genuine self-doubt (and is positively Bradbury-ian in her unspeakable unspecified horribleness), and the elemental intervention of Granny Aching et sheepdogs at the apex of the plot is fantastic. Can't wait to talk this one up, kind of sad I haven't read up on the Aching books until now.

Crivens! I can't believe I've never read anything by this author. What a fabulous fun time I had tearing through this book. I laughed out loud frequently and was impressed with the story overall.

So I was required to read this book as a part of my Children's Lit subject and I found it much more detailed and interesting and relatable than I had expected to. Sure, I wasn't in love with it, but I'm also not a nine year old girl so there were parts that I didn't connect to as much as I could have. That being said, this is a children's book, but it isn't just a children's book. I would recommend this to adults almost as much as I would to children. One of my lecturers is currently doing his PHD on the series, so it's not without intricate content.

The accents within the book were a little difficult to adjust to, with them being heavily Irish in nature, but I think being Australian was helpful when translating the slang into words that made sense. Also, Tiffany is nine years old, which seems like an actual toddler, but she is intelligent and logical and realistically advanced for her age so it's not as much of a distance between the protagonist and adult readers as in some children's novels.

I did just finish critically analysing this novel so I'm attempting not to go as in depth as I did for that, but it contains some really intense and really significant content, especially concerning discrimination and mental illness and grief. Which may seem like a turn off if you're considering this book series for a child, but it is addressed in a very deliberate manner, allowing children to comprehend the difficult topics without becoming condescending or overbearing.

I think I'd be interested in continuing the series, and I'd love to read the entirety of the Discworld collection but that's a 41 book commitment and I'm not certain I'm ready for that. Some backstory, this is a spin-off series, set specifically for children and young adults, and is part of a larger set of works of adult science-fiction. This spin-off series is a five book collection that can be read separately from the rest of the books, while still maintaining connections.

This book was simple enough to read and I got a lot out of it as an adult, enough to interest me in the rest of Pratchett's novels, without being completely overwhelmed by the sheer amount of content put in front of me. I think it would be a great book for younger readers and adults alike and I recommend picking it up, and perhaps reading it more than once to see how much you can find ingrained within the text because, trust me, there's a lot.

Light-hearted fun. I read this book because my daughter said a new teacher was like Nanny Ogg and googling didn't give me enough information. Turns out Nanny Ogg only has a brief cameo at the tail end of the book, but I enjoyed it enough to keep reading.

This is one of those books that was comforting to me as a middle-school girl looking for a strong, female heroine who was bitingly funny and intelligent. I still pick it up every year for a re-read.

Alle paar Seiten musste musste ich schallend lachen. Wundervoll, witzig und spannend.
