As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner

Ugh.
William Faulkner, you are the REASON people hate high school English! This book was confusing just for the sake of being ambiguous! I disliked every character, it wasn't pleasurable to read, and the ending stunk!

After learning Mr. Faulk won the Nobel Prize....I have now lost faith in the Nobel Prize! Book club is gonna heeeeaarrr about this one.

This is probably the Faulkner novel I would recommend to someone who hasn’t read Faulkner before. It is more approachable and self-contained than The Sound and the Fury, but still thematically rich. While the book has a lot of tonal shifts, most of it works in a dark, cynical mode. The Bundrens’ journey to bury their mother features biblical allusions and epic storytelling, but the core actions taken by the characters are absurd, their motivations often selfish and venal. Here, Faulkner indicts the rigidity and “stuck-in-their-ways-ness” of his poor rural protagonists (emphasized through characters’ tendencies to repeat the same lines over and over), but also the rank hypocrisy of the religious and the cruelty of the wealthier townspeople who turn the Bundrens’ “promised land” into just another living hell.
