Another outstanding entry from Joe Abercrombie filled with grimdark character work at its finest and some of the best battle sequences since The Heroes, his standalone. I really enjoyed the Industrial Revolution meets French Revolution vibe of this second entry in the Age of Madness, and am already itching to pick up the final entry in the trilogy. A must-read for Abercrombie fans.

Hands down the best middle book of a trilogy I've ever read, perhaps Abercrombie's best work so far as well. It was an improvement over its predecessor in every single way, with an enthralling plot, impeccable pacing, and amazing character development, which left me wondering where the hell the story would even go from here, considering everything that happened. I would have finished it in 3 days which would be the fastest I ever read a 500+ page book, if I hadn't postponed reading the last act due to real-life matters. Without spoilers, I would say it just encompasses the best of everything he has to offer into a single book, but the stakes are higher than last time, and it's executed better than ever. I believe this book has cemented
Orso and Rikke
as my favorite characters in the new trilogy, and as much as I would like to gush about my newfound favorites, this is one of those instances where I would just prefer to go and read the next book immediately than talk ( Although I won't yet because I am still processing.. ). So yes, no complaints, no extra thoughts, I am simply blown away!

"Hoping for a thing often seems the best way o' bringing on the opposite."

Just a masterful sequel. Full of thrilling scheming, uprising, and betrayal. Abercrombie hardly seems to miss.

Even though I thought this book was slower than A Little Hatred, there wasn't a single dull moment here. For whatever reason, I seem to have slower starts for getting immersed into an Abercrombie book. But not this time. I was thoroughly engaged from page one.

And those final 100 pages?! Insane and the implications are going to be wild.

(Additionally, speaking of A Little Hatred, this book is probably enough to bump that rating to 5 stars. I was already thinking of that book often after I finished it, and I love it even more after reading this one. And the more I contemplate, the more I realize that I probably won't experience writing and characters on par with Abercrombie's in many of the books I read in the future.)

I also haven't really pinned down a favorite character yet, but I think it has to be Rikke. She's hilarious. I seriously just cannot get enough of all the Northmen banter. If Abercrombie wrote a book just about Northmen talking I would eagerly wait in the bookstore for it on release day.

I truly can't wait to see where this story goes in the final book of the trilogy.

"Good fiction. Gooooooood fiction." - BDG

Really good gallows humor, and all of the plot threads braid together in a way that makes sense.

The ending for this book was much more interesting than in the first book.
