This was such a fun surprise! I read this as a kid but completely forgot the plot. So many good lessons about friendship, family dynamics, and environmentalism. Loved it!!
Energetic and mysterious tale of a new kid, a shoeless boy, and a tough girl who pull a town together to save owls from being destroyed.
• Child Appeal: Driving plot that coaxes the reader to continue reading, mystery and mayhem, environmental justice, triumphant young adult characters. Will appeal to those enjoying detective stories and especially boys. Interested in animals and the outdoor world.

This was a good book. I liked the characters in it, all except for chuck muckle. My favorite has to be Mother Paula. Espacially in the end.
All a remembers is he saves burrowing owls. I have read all four books including hoot, flush, chomp and scat (partially read). Flush is about saving the sea from a ship that is illegally dumping waste into the sea. He does this using some help and purple dye. Chomp is about a boy going with his father who is a camera man to film for a survivalist TV show. In actuality the snobby and rich actor is not a survivalist and the boy brings this to light. It ends with the boy learning that the survivalist show has hired a new actor who truly is a survivalist. The books are long.
Fun story with many memorable characters, rollicking adventure, and an engaging plot. This is quintessential Hiaasen for kids from the Florida setting to the pro-environmental tale and the quirky characters.
The author surprises me with his ability to write, both for the adult audience as well as teens. This book, about one teen quest to battle "the man" and stick up for something (and someone) he truly believes in is a great story for all ages
It was absolutely beautiful ❤️❤️❤️, just a YA book about youth's impact to many problematic things that a pancake restaurant construction site is being built BUT it concerns and threats the habitat of the owls that surrounds it. This book may be a silly goofy novel about three kids Roy, Mullet and Beatrice who just plays around and pranks the site to delay the construction of the restaurant and the 'inevitable' destruction of the owl's habitat, its pleasant to see that even young ones through their own unique ways, can have a positive significant effect to the world around them.
3.5 stars rounded to a generous 4 - a cute, wee story that I'd like my kids to read. Strong morals, entertaining pranks and an important message.
An enjoyable YA book where Roy tries to save burrowing owls from a pancake franchise being built and ruining their habitat. Along the way, Roy has to address a bully, the police, and a mysterious boy with no shoes who is also wanting to protect the land by any means he can.
