Good story with a strong message and believable characters. Most kids in our book club had trouble following it in places and gave up reading it...but perhaps because the writing was a bit over their heads. I could see a 5th or 6th grader enjoying it (the intended audience).
While I found the plot of this story to be intriguing, I just couldn't get past the harshness of some characters or the seemingly unnecessary language. Reading this with my eight year old allowed for us to have some meaningful conversations, but still-- it was all just a little too much for me. I didn't look forward to sitting down and reading this one each night, which isn't the case with the books we usually read together.

I reread this book for nostalgia's sake and to take a break from the more mature books that I read prior to it. It's a heartwarming story whose target audience is middle schoolers. For that audience, it gives a sense of agency that all teenagers want, directed towards a positive goal (saving the owls).
My 11-year-old and I just finished reading Hoot together, and we loved it! Carl Hiaasen has just the right combination of humor, pranks, and quirky characters, plus a compelling mission and good triumphing over greed. I'd recommend this one for middle-school-aged kids -- and adults too. Lots of fun.

Read to son #2 at bedtime. A bit long but fun characters and a good message.
I love how Carl Hiaasen's books deal with enviromental pollution or endangered animals. They're great reads, but at the same time, the books send messages and making people aware that we need to preserve our wildlife.
Anyone who enjoyed Hoot should try reading Carl Hiaasen's other young adult books: Flush and Scat

I read this book to see if my daughter would like it. She will in a few years. Loved the idea that children while vigalantes could stop a corporation from environmental destruction.
