The Hunter King

Jagger Cole

4.04 AVERAGE

I enjoyed this book. I was so happy to see that the hero is Kristoff. I have been intrigued by him since the Savage Heir series. Tatiana is great. She is definitely more than meets the eye. Jagger Cole has a way of just capturing my attention from the start. Kristoff and Tatiana are explosive together
dark fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

I couldn't decide between a one and two star rating so I split the difference.
Where to begin?
Let's start with the elephant in the room, or between the pages, as it were. This is a dark romance written by a heterosexual man and unfortunately, it does all of the things you might expect. It focuses solely on the sexual needs and proclivities of the characters for well over half the book until suddenly, they're in this trusting relationship despite the fact one kidnapped the other and murdered people to do so. There is no attention paid to the development of emotions between this pair and I found the female pov to be incredibly two dimensional in a very, 'Oh my, I love all these naughty things this big bad man is doing to me, but my gosh, he kidnapped me so I must be the sick and depraved one.' Give me a break, dude. Let's not forget how utterly massive the MMC's junk is and how many times we're told, nor how he speaks to her like she's a faceless porn star while he takes whatever he wants from her. This. Is. Not. Sexy.
Now, the primal kink... that's fine. It's explored thoroughly, though I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little icked out to have CNC play written by a man. I don't find her consent honest or genuine, not that the MMC ever asked for it to begin with.
Add to that, it's poorly written and edited. Words are overused and typos are extremely common. It descends into cloak and dagger Patterson-esque plot twists. The formatting screams high school creative writing class and.. oh my god I think I'm talking myself into one star.
Just because a man ventures into writing romance, does not make his point of view interesting or worthy of attention.
This could have been great had the author approached it with more self awareness, care, and professionalism.

You know how when you go to the movie theater and you sit on the edge of your seat the whole time and chew all your fingernails off while you calculate all your future therapy bills yet you can’t look away from the screen? Yeah. That’s this book. I’m convinced Jagger is my favorite author at this point. His books destroy me in the best of ways. We asked for “her” (no spoilers) and holy shiitake mushrooms did he deliver in the biggest plot twist. I received an advanced copy of this book and I’m willingly leaving this review.
