I've been wanting to read any of Sherlock Holmes' stories but somehow I haven't been able to...Until the book club that I've been part of finally chose this book as this month's book to read. Written from the perspective of Dr. Watson, Holmes' wingman, this book made me understand why the franchise is very famous and enjoyable. Holmes' ability to deduct things is impressive to me, also the way it's written is very enjoyable. I'll pick up another Holmes' story in the near future for sure.
I’ve read a few Sherlock Holmes stories before, but I had never gotten around to A Study in Scarlet, the very first one. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I ended up really enjoying it. My favorite part was the beginning, where Dr. Watson arrives in London after serving in the second war in Afghanistan. Looking for a place to live, he ends up sharing a flat with a strange but fascinating man named Sherlock Holmes. Before long, Watson finds himself caught up in a murder investigation, and Holmes proves to be a brilliant and unique detective.
What surprised me most was the sudden shift in the middle of the book. The story moves away from London to the deserts of Utah and focuses on a group of Mormons. At first, I was confused and didn’t understand why the narrative had changed so drastically. But as I kept reading, I realized this section was the backstory to the murder introduced earlier. Once I understood that, I became more interested and really wanted to know how everything would connect in the end.

A solid detective case that kept me guessing throughout.
I definitely enjoyed Part One and the later chapters that featured Holmes and Watson solving the case far more than the chapters in Part Two that were set in America.
Although it took me a while to get into/read through the chapters featuring the reason the murder comitted their crime, it was interesting to read and not at all what I was expecting.
3.5/4 stars

4 stars. I love Sherlock Holmes adaptations (the ones that are done well that is) so the fact that it's taken me this long to read one of the original stories is a damn shame. This was actually really good and I enjoyed it. Also, the first episode of the BBC adaptation Sherlock sticks pretty faithfully to the source material which was really cool to see. The writing is good and digestible which is always appreciated because as much as I do love classics, they can be a bit tedious to read at times. I didn't have that problem here though.
My one issue was that I enjoyed part one far more than part two. Part two seemed to kinda drag a bit until the end which I thought this wrapped up well. Holmes and Watson were interesting and so much different than I was expecting them to be given what I've seen in the media but that wasn't a bad thing. I plan on definitely continuing on with these stories because this one was awesome and I look forward to seeing how the characters grow and develop from here.

Fun story, stitched together predictably and still surprising. Enjoyed.
