I absolutely loved the description in this book. It was really as if Adrienne Young lived the book herself. I wish that l didn’t have to wait until March for the next book.
I’m here to say I officially understand now why Fable took the book world by storm. WOW. I LOVED it. Thank you fellow readers for convincing me that Fable is a must-read, because it 100% was.
Seriously, what an adventure! I couldn’t put Fable down (you can ask my husband). I’ll be completely honest here... I wasn’t totally sure going in that a pirate story would even be for me and I was a bit nervous. But I’m so glad I took the chance because oh, was I mistaken. I think it goes to show just how immersive and skilled this author’s writing is that she can take and wrap you up into the world of something you’re unsure about and make you fall completely in love.
The characters, the atmosphere, the incredibly descriptive writing. All of it. It was like I became a part of the ruthless seas, dangerous ships, gritty cities, and was a crew member alongside the rest. There was intrigue, suspense, and surprise waiting around every corner, and many times I found myself holding my breath. This book truly was an experience and I already miss the feeling of reading it for the very first time. I’m purposely leaving out any specific details here because I just don’t want to take away from even one second of this story holds. Just know that underneath it all is a rich story of friendship and family and the meaning of home when it seems that home can’t exist.
My best recommendation for reading this one if you haven’t yet, is to make sure you have some good solid time to sit down with it, because I guarantee you won’t be able to put it down either. This is one of the most perfectly executed YA books I’ve read and if you’re not convinced yet, can I just politely say you must pick it up?

A steady, satisfying sail along with a very efficient author.
Adrienne Young has a signature simple writing style that I really enjoy. As in the Sky in the Deep series, her plots have more than enough action, but they’re stark in contrast to the many novels that try to tell three or four full stories. Young chooses the best and sticks with it. When her A plot touches a B plot, there’s always true relevance. The smaller plot is often quickly absorbed, but not lost. it’s very efficient, enjoyable writing.
Fable is a girl. Her mother worked aboard a ship, her father was the captain. When her mother died, Fable’s father marooned her on a cutthroat island to scrape out a living of her own at the age of 14 or so. As scary YA heroines always do, she managed. And 4 years later when the urgent need to escape arose, she talked her way off island aboard the Marigold, a ship likewise run by teenagers. Because that happens.
In Book 1, Fable struggles to join the crew – until, of course, shared close-calls bond them as tightly as any family. They have adventures. She contributes greatly to these. She has secrets. Finds out why her father did what he did. Other people have secrets. She finds those out too. Nothing groundbreaking happens here, but the plot bobs merrily along the ocean trade routes and around the dodgy port cities where the Marigold works. There’s a handsome boy, a sassy girl, an emotionally unavailable adult. Again, nothing new, but everything enough. Young’s seafaring world is convincingly detailed but not overly complex, matching the tone of the book. It made me want to buy salty texture spray for my hair.
