A typical Jenny Colgan story - sweet, with some mild angst, and perfect for my mood right now.
I didn't love the scenes where we popped back to WWII although I certainly understand their importance to the story.

Unexpectedly (because I like cupcakes and chocolate better than candy) this is probably my favorite of the three that I read. As the name would suggest, it's very sweet!
Colgan's heroines can sometimes take a little time to grow on me but they are always worth sticking through. This was one of her funnier ones; Rosie was always getting into ridiculous situations. And, per usual, if people would just talk to each other, things would go more smoothly but I enjoyed the backdrop of the sweet shop and Lilian's story.
although being gifted with utter cheese and quick paced writing, i found this book to be sadly quite boring. it has been rated the best romance novel of the year … yet there was no romance until the final 100 pages of the book where the protagonist Rosie suddenly realises she’s deeply in love. i think the book would have been far more rewarding and enjoyable had there been more focus on her budding feelings for Stephen.
i found there to be no character depth in any of the other characters apart from Lilian. her sad stories of youth impacting her last days as an old woman was touching. her personality has hardened over the years due to heartbreak and she rejects Rosie’s help. however, it seems out of nowhere in the last 50 pages that they have a strong bond and are sad to be separated by the old peoples home … although this was touching and did make me smile, i was confused by the sudden change. a natural development across the book would have been relevant in making it believable that Lilian found who she was through Rosie likewise Rosie found who she was through Lilian.

Loved this book, loved all the characters except for the evil dentist. How could you not love a book about sweeties :)

Did enjoy this and worth a read but it seemed very slow and a bit predictable. Real feel good factor with a few surprises and a nice ending. One to read with a cup of cocoa in front of a coal fire!
