Liked the ones that were actually fairy tales; less fond of the ones that were just his dreams about war and such.

This is a stunningly gorgeous book. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Some of the stories are laugh out loud funny, most are thought provoking, all are beautiful. The use of language is breathtaking- there are ever so many paragraphs that are worth reading, then reading aloud, savoring each word.

An intriguing collection of tales, some are more traditional European fairy tale stories than others. The introduction also gives a brief glimpse into Hesse's life as an author and artist. That intro gives the stories a good context, especially regarding his views on aestheticism and pacifism. Recommended if you like Hesse's writing and/or devestating fairy tales.
