A solid 3. Entertaining, I loved the literary references, and I loved the connections of what hoarding looks like to different people.

I ADORED this super sweet and swoony contemporary! I loved Darcy and her mind for words and books and her best friend Marisol, who's one of the best written MC best friends I've ever read. Her life and family just jump off the page.

The romance is lovely and a tad bit melodramatic at times, but it all fit into the context of the story. There's one part I wish there had been more time devoted to
SpoilerDarcy's time acting as Beatrice
, but overall this book gave me all the feels and keep me turning the pages.

Definitely recommended.

Books and stories help Darcy escape the stifling surroundings of her mother’s hoarding. Her job at a local bookstore engulfs her in other worlds and feeds her love for literature. One day, her path crosses with Asher Fleet and his story makes her want to share her own. But can she peel back all the layers and let all of the truth show?

I always have said I only read romance if there is some meat to the story. A romance steeped in literature and bookstores? With the complication of a mother who hoards? Sounds like a good escape to me!

And it was. I melted into the boxes crowding the halls and rooms of Darcy’s apartment. I became a book on the shelves at Yellow Feather Bookstore. I morphed into a wig that adorned Darcy’s head as she visited with the gal in the shop next door. I inhaled all the book dust – and reveled in each book title and literature reference.

And then, as I neared the end, possible
Spoiler, I worried that maybe I too was hoarding books and stories like Darcy. Ultimately, I decided that “No. That isn’t me.” I use stories to escape and heal, yes. But hoard them? No, that definition felt a bit extreme for me
.

The relationships illustrated in this novel are simply divine. There is not another word I can think of. I just treasured Marisol and Darcy’s deep friendship – and their origin story was one for the ages. But each relationship in this book: Darcy and her mother, Darcy and her grandmother, Darcy and Asher, Asher and London, Mr. Winston and Tess, every one of them was captivating and consuming.

This is a refreshing addition to the realistic fiction genre. Hoarding is not discussed and is an illness kept more deeply hidden than depression. I can see many finding comfort in the pages of Darcy’s tale – and all readers will watch their TBR list grow as Darcy works through her bookshelves as she tells her story.

Couldn’t finish. It read like a teenage diary.

I rarely use "I didn't want to put this down" in the literal term, but here it absolutely applies! I needed to know more, I needed every detail. It all mattered to me. It was so easy to just fall into this story. (My love for living through literature, and Peter Pan, didn't hinder this either!) It's easy to chunk this into the romance category, but this is definitely not a romance. Sure, it has a love story. But it's not about falling in love with the knight in shining armor. It's about falling in love with yourself, your truths. Something that is so important to readers, of all ages.

About The Library of Lost Things:

IMHO: The Library of Lost Things

The Library of Lost Things is lovely. I immediately fell in love with Darcy and her BFF Marisol. They're arty opposites that get each other and activate growth in each other, but don't try to change each other's fundamental nature. I appreciate the introvert staying the introvert & no one treating it as the end of the world.

Her Mr. Darcy romance is far more understandable and endearing, which won me over faster than any other Mr.Darcy before.

I'm not a Peter Pan fan, but I've never read the book either. Those quotes with the mystery squibbler were interesting and illustrated how whatever book you're reading affects your life at the time.

The Rundown:

  • I love this take on Mr. Darcy’s unpleasantness

  • The bookstore, its persnickety owner.

  • The wig shop next door and its owner as well

  • Tea time dress up breaks

  • BFFs

  • Marisol & her fam!

  • Anxiety attacks

  • Hoarding, but clean

  • Accidental disability

  • High school play - Much Ado About Nothing

  • Chill parties at the beach and an airplane hanger

  • Love how the break up & new relationship jump worked out

  • Reading recommendations at the end!

  • Great, complex and growing mother daughter relationships

  • Didn't see the mystery scribbler reveal coming

  • Did figure her moms was hiding something, but didn't affect my reading & enjoyment

Great Rating Graphic

Perfect for YA contemporary fans of all ages & kinds. Sweet and understanding romance that blooms with the introverted book nerd heroine.

Favorite Quotes from The Library of Lost Things:

The circle never broke. We lived in a home strung across tightropes.

“Darcy with a heartshaped face.” She tapped one finger on my chest. ”And a book-shaped heart.”

“But if you’re about to do something questionable and stupid and brilliant and cunning, you’re not doing it without me.”

Not after a night where I’d had to curl my toes around the edge of a towering sea cliff, an ocean of my secrets below.

Or was I just fooling myself--trying to craft a rightful heroine out of a sneaking thief?

“Sometimes you need to do more for yourself than just manage.”

“Darcy, I won’t tell you to break a leg. That’s not good enough. Break an entire body.” But hopefully, not my heart.

So many times, I’d read about hurt, but now it stood at my feet with a heartbeat.

Extraordinary. I’d heard that word before, from lips I trusted more.
