A lot of pretty words about a girl who loves pretty words. The characters are enjoyable (although in a lot cases a bit flat), the plot is fine but not incredible. I loved Darcy and relate to her a lot. My main complaint is that a lot of the book is spent repeating one metaphor: using her mother’s hoarder tendencies as a literal example of how messy life can be. She can’t open up to people because life is messy. She distracts herself with books because life is messy. The lack of variety in the imagery can get a bit repetitive.
Overall a fairly standard YA romance and a very good debut. The author’s writing style is really nice and I might check out more of her work.

this read was kinda... meh. i loved darcy, and i loved marisol. in fact, i loved all the women in this book because they're fully fleshed out and had depths to them. the men, though (except mr. winston) are all rather bland. so it's safe to say this book is more driven by the female characters, which i'm not complaining about because we love women appreciation, but considering asher was the love interest, i wish he had a brighter spotlight because he's one of the very few high school book boys who aren't annoying to the point i would bash their heads with a bathroom slipper if i met them in real life. take from that what you will.

**Not really spoilers but maybe a few? Either way, warning just in case.**
Okay so firstly, THIS. COVER. It is cute as hell and part of the reason I wanted to read this book.
Overall I enjoyed this and managed to devour it in a solid day's reading. There were aspects of the plot that felt predictable at times due to the nature of the plot but the overall themes I felt were tackled well and in a simple but effective way. For me, the constant, shall we say 'bookish talk', didn't bother me much as it was obviously a key theme to Darcy's problems.
The ending for me was totally ideal and I'm so glad. It showed the progress our characters, made and how it's only really the beginning for them in a new chapter.
All of the character's relationships felt organic and not at all forced. I was excited to see where Asher's and Darcy's relationship went and also how Darcy's and Marisol's friendship faired through it all. (I wasn't disappointed cause like, everyone needs a Marisol in their life honestly.) And can I just say, I'm SO glad that our main 'antagonist' theme wasn't the school's popular kid being a bully. Sure, there were very few aspects of this typical theme with the beach party and house party scenes, but instead of it being a driving force of the main issue it was purely used as a small plot device which was a slightly refreshing change.
All in all, enjoyable book and a fairly easy read.
