This book feels like a multi-dimensional car crash that you just can’t look away from.

After losing her mother to cancer, Bridge is using a secret substance called the dreamworm to search for her in other versions of her life. Not only does this have dangerous consequences for every version of Bridge and the people helping her, it also calls into question how much you're willing to sacrifice for a loved one and rip other people out of their lives without any consent.
Finally, I think this book really shows that every little choice we make impacts our life and that there's still always going to be something better to wish for - and maybe true happiness comes from accepting our own life as it is.

2.5 stars rounded down. I really wanted to like this book; the concept is cool, and I love reading about alternate universes, but this just did not grab me. It's a bit too long, and it was a chore to get through the middle of the book.

BONKERS AS USUAL. I really like Lauren Beukes' writing. The way she writes violence is somehow visceral and lyrical at the same time. I won't say she makes her most reprehensible characters sympathetic, but she does an amazing job describing their innermost thoughts and motivations that the reader almost almost gets it (sometimes).

If my mother had been drugging me since I was a little girl I probably wouldn't go crossing universes to find her and would realise she's a nasty piece of work before the end of the book???

Bridge is grieving the loss of her mom and takes her friend Dom to help clean out her house. While digging in the freezer, they find a stringy mass in a Tupperware with ratatouille. They find that this "dreamworm" can transport you to other realities and can help you briefly inhabit your alternate selves. Bridge uses the dreamworm to try to find her mother and, in the process, sees how differently her life could have turned out.

This complex, intimate work with several interwoven narratives reflects on grief and the branching possibilities of life.

I love the idea of this book but it was a little hard to follow. I’ll give it credit for originality, a unique take on the multiverse, but found myself pushing through. 2⭐️
