The poems in this collection are characteristically Billy-Ray Belcourt: cerebral yet emotionally charged, couched in theory and abstract metaphor, vulnerably defiant. I found this collect a bit more difficult to access than his other works, but these poems were not written for me, not made to accommodate me. As Belcourt writes, "I pit language against itself and want nothing clean to come of it. This too is a form of violence." Also: "In the end, it wasn't intelligibility we were after."

I found this book only because it was on the CBC Reads long list.

It was amazing, so intersectional and an insight to a life that I know of but not experienced. It’s the type of poetry that I would like to take a class on or read an analysis. I don’t feel one read is enough.

I’m an fortunate to find this poet at the start of what I hope is a long career!

Beautiful, personal, and illuminating, though I don't have the PhD to understand more than half of it.

Incredible, powerful, and funny collection of poetry. The bookseller was so excited for me to buy this book and said Billy-Ray Belcourt would change my life, couldn't agree more. And cannot wait to read everything they've written.
