The Civil War comes to an abrupt end when the dead rise at Gettysburg. The dead walk the earth as zombies (called shamblers.) The job of putting them down goes predominantly to Black folks. Our protagonist is a Black girl named Jane, trained in fighting and killing the unnatural, restless dead -- but her real enemies come in the form of those who use the idea of a "natural order" to oppress. Like in all the best zombie stories, the real enemy is the living.

This book is fast-paced and exciting enough for any fan of action and adventure and has excellent historical details that any nerd like me will love.

I also highly recommend the audiobook, narrated by Bahni Turpin, who can make the serious moments feel serious and do each voice beautifully.

As hard as it is to swallow real life evil in a zombie apocalypse, Dread Nation still manages to find thrills in its adventure.

I’m not going to lie, this is not what I was expecting from this book. I thought it would just be like classic zombie apocalypse style with the MC and crew going around and killing with style. I was NOT expecting the false utopia that was actually presented in this. But hey, unexpected stuff can be fun, and this was.

I cannot say enough good things about this book. It was so good. I did not want to stop reading. The heaviness of the subject-matter was handled gently, and the author thoroughly researched historical facts/events as the backdrop for this story. You will root for Jane (main character) the entire time.
