I saw this for sale at the airport bookstore yesterday, and picked it up for my kindle before taking off on our Christmas vacation flight. I have refused to purchase or read the final book in the Sookie Stackhouse series after hearing what the author did to the characters, but I did greatly enjoy the series before its ignominious end. Reading stories about various characters, mostly smaller or bit parts from the larger series, written from other points of view was great fun and I enjoyed all of the stories.

My favorite two stories involved Luna the werebat and Pam the vampire, with the final concluding story about Eric interesting as well. The small event that brought Luna and Sookie's nephew together to help find a lost and confused teenage shifter was perfect, and the whole story was a sweet interaction that ended well without involving any of the main characters. Pam has always been my favorite character (with Eric a very close second), and the writing of her story was absolutely beautiful and true to her character, and made me laugh with the sheer perfection of it. As for the last one, the writer managed to pull some meaning from the travesty of the last novel to make it worthwhile for Eric, which I think was deftly done.

If you enjoy other books in this universe, you'll likely enjoy this one. However, there is little to no inclusion of main characters, so if that's what you're looking for this is not the right place for that.

It's a collection of stories that read like fan-fiction. Only one story really captured the essence of the Southern Vampire Mysteries/TrueBlood series.

Considering Charlaine Harris didn't actually write any of these I was kind of expecting more. Or at least better. Unfortunately, most of these stories were pretty terrible. It was difficult to tell if the voice actress was just really terrible at times or if it was the terrible writing. Her growly southern men tended to sound like really angry simpletons who yelled too much. But then sometimes she was good. I know how difficult it must be to come up with all those voices and sound like you ARE the character and actually care about the character you're portraying, so I couldn't be too hard on her. She probably did the best she could with what she had to work with. And so, here are the worst of the worst and the best of the mediocre:

WORST:

Tyger, Tyger - UGH. SO dramatic. SO much yelling and growling! UGH

What a Dream I Had - I still don't care about Alcide but now because of this story I truly and absolutely hate him and everyone connected with him.

The Million Dollar Hunt- Just terrible. Violent, gross, poorly-written, confusing, non-sensical, and the voices. All yelling and growly.

BEST:

The Real Santa Claus - This was a great one by Leigh Perry (or aka Toni LP Kelner) and it's the most solid story in the bunch, although I bet Charlaine Harris was consulted on this one. It was fun, it featured a fun character (Diantha), and it was interesting.

The Bat Signal - This is about Luna the were-bat and it's fun and interesting, dealing with feminist/outcast issues and has a decent moral dilemma and has a weird pairing of minor character with Sookie's mind-reading nephew.

Extreme Makeover Vamp Edition - Ok, so this one was kind of silly but also interesting and fun. It's about Bev and Todd, the vampires on TV that do makeovers who have to go and try to give a makeover to a reluctant recluse at the request of Eric Northman. So fun.

Most of the stories were bad or dull or I just didn't care, but it was nice getting to know some of Charlaine Harris's more cardboard characters.

I have a rough time with short stories in general, so this book was going to be a hard sell from the start. That being said, a few of the stories are really good and others seem so out of character for the characters that Harris created and we grew to love that they were hard to read.

Oddly the best Sookie Stackhouse book since Dead in the Family.
