Not terrible but not good enough to hold my interest so I’m bailing now. Sage isn’t a compelling enough character to carry this story, plus he comes across as very young when he’s supposed to be just shy of 30 - and a whiny, almost deliberately clueless 30 yr old gets annoying real fast.

This new series from Sam Burns is an incredible mix of magic, adventure, mystery and romance.

Sages's story is a heartbreaking one but as he says, he does his best and makes do with what he has because that is the Sage way and is amazing.

I love Joel Leslie. He is one of the best narrators out there with incredible performances and it's always a treat hearing him narrate my favorite stories, like this one. Sometimes though very emotional stories, especially if I have read them first, don't have the same impact, maybe because of my frame of my mind or finding that the narration lacks that that much needed emotional punch, I don't know, but this is what happened here as well.

Still though give it a try because it really is a marvellous story.

This book was a good time! I like the world that Sam has built here and the I'm attached to every single character. Especially Fluke <3

I will say there is a bit of a lull in the middle of the book where the pacing didn't keep me and I took a bit of a break to read another book. I almost didn't come back to finish it, but I am so glad that I did - the last 25% of this book brought it up a full star for me!

Sage McKinley, a low power level mage, and proprietor of a bookstore that he inherited from his recently deceased father can see ghosts. Its a fairly rare power but not one that's super helpful? All its done so far is make him have to deal with his father's incessant nagging; they didn't quite get along in life and he's even worse now in death. Until one day Sage saves a poor fox that's getting harassed by some people in an alley...and it quickly becomes apparent that that fox is his familiar. Low level mages don't always get one so its pretty unique that he found one at thirty.
...and then a gunslinger named Gideon appears in his shop. A ghost. Who says Sage is stronger than he knows. And a the next in line of a legacy of arcane magic who he has been tasked to train.

This book was a hoot. I really enjoyed it. The inner dialogue that Sage has with the audience is hilarious at times and Fluke (his familiar) is charming as hell. Gideon is sweet and protective of Sage. The murder mystery is fun to experience if a little obvious. Ends on a cliff hanger which made me immediately start book 2 which is a bummer for some but didn't really bother me.
