I actually did not finish. This is a book with multiple short stories, and after I read a few, it seemed repetitive to me and I didn’t feel like reading them all. I did enjoy the stories, but I didn’t feel like I needed to finish all 13 of them. I’m so glad I read Agatha, and that I met Ms Marple. I’m sure I’ll read other stories of Agatha in the future!

Also known as The Thirteen Problems and was first published in 1932, it is our first meeting with Miss Marple and she is very different to the Marple of my imagination. She is a Victorian lady through and through with ‘a black brocade dress pinched in a round the waist. Mechlin lace was arranged in a cascade down the front of the bodice. She had on black lace mittens, and a black lace cap surmounted the piled up masses of her snowy hair.’ She sounds like Queen Victoria to me!

But what hasn’t changed is Marple’s shrewdness

‘There is a great deal of wickedness in village life. I hope you dear young people will never realise how very wicked the world is.’

The Tuesday Murder Club is a gathering of people each telling a mystery each week and they have to try to figure out the solution. There’s a lovely mix, the clergyman, the solicitor, the artist, the policeman and the writer. The latter being Raymond West, Miss Marple’s nephew and who completely underestimates his aunt. He’s quite annoying but I love how Miss Marple always gets one over on him!
The later stories feature Colonel and Mrs Bantry, Henry Clithering again, an actress and a doctor.

I love these mysteries, short and simple but also baffling. I’ve begun to learn over time where to look for the clues and I can see some now, carefully and cleverly placed. Every time I return to Agatha I find something new, that is the mark of a really great writer.

Would be even better if I understood some of the super specific Britishisms or period references to solve the mysteries.
