Man great atmosphere and premise just let down with a very abrupt ending. Could have been a really cool novel but ah well still good, hope the adaptation does more.
I just watched the film that this short story is based off of and the realized the short story came first. So obviously I rushed home and immediately read it!
This was a solid 4 star read for me. It contained all of the elements of a short story that I look for, including a clear introduction, a nicely-paced plot leading up to the climax, and I particularly enjoyed the rapid and abrupt ending. While some may see this story as incomplete due to the type of ending that it had, I really enjoyed the ending and the abrupt ending seemed fitting regarding how the story was paced and what kind of story it was. (For those looking for more character depth and a more drawn out conclusion, I would highly recommend the film The Black Phone. The film has more characters, depth, and a longer ending which are all very well done! The movie is also extremely true to the short story!)
The characters in this short story were also done very well for how little we knew them. Just enough background was given to make the readers care about and have feelings towards the characters. While I would have enjoyed more depth (which is why I bumped this short story from 5 to 4 stars), I understand that that type of depth will not happen in a short story. This would have made an excellent full length novel or even novella.
Overall this was a good read! My only criticisms are that the climax and ending were very sudden compared to the rest of the story and the characters were not as explored as I would want them to be. But overall this was a very good read and I would highly recommend it. I would also recommend the movie adaption as well!

This is considered his best short story from that collection.Dang
Didn't give me anything new besides the Grabber's name, tbh. No backstory, no character development, nothing. My advice is skip it and just watch the movie instead!
I loved the movie, and I thought that I would love the story even more, but I feel like it wasn’t the same. Yeah, the premise is the same but the story lacks the heart, the feelings.

Never thought I would say this... but, the movie was better.
As it's own thing, it's not terrible. Certainly not the best short story I have ever read, but not too bad, either. The plot had a lot of potential, but I felt like there were too many other elements that the author was trying to incorporate that just could not develop sufficiently in 30 pages. I never have to read this again, but the movie I would probably watch again.
