I've actually never read this, I had only seen the movie, so this was interesting. There was a lot I didn't expect, like Nana's role and what the Darlings did while the kids were in Neverland.

Obviously a product of the time it was written in, but the racism is tough to read.

This book has such a unique narrative voice that it is practically begging to be read aloud.
I loved all the unique fantastical facts, like the whispering stars and mothers organizing their children’s thoughts.

Unfortunately, I can’t ignore the racism in this book. If I ever chose to read this aloud to a child I would have to change the words and descriptions about the native people in Neverland.

Aside from this major flaw, the book managed to capture the joyfulness and sometimes cruelty of childhood in a way that I didn’t expect.

Quite magical. It's very like the story we know from Disneys retelling of this, but of course being the source it gives much more small details that really flesh things out. The idea of growing up, adulthood vs childhood, dreams, time, motherhood, different societal expectations of boys and girls, is all so so interesting. Although Peter is decidedly more of an annoying brat, which I think is certainly intentional as a boy left to his own devices living off magic and raised by fairies. So, I get it. He has a certain softness at points which makes you feel sympathetic towards him. Anyway such a full and interesting classic!!
