Not the best Stephen King, but it was early, under the Bachman name. It doesn't seem like a very original plot now, but it was well before The Hunger Games. Hard to think this was written by the same guy who wrote The Stand. The main character was not likeable, even though he was a victim. I wanted a quick read, and it delivered on that front.

A bit more informal of a review from me -
This was an interesting read. Such a great premise, and an iconic/infamous reputation, but not without the Bachman of it all. I saw the ending coming from a mile away, but that doesn’t make the ending any lesser.
In terms of Bachman, since King wrote this in three days with the assistance of the devil’s powder and no post-first-draft-edits, it makes sense - though it no where near touches the virtuosity of ‘The Long Walk’.
Looking forward to the upcoming film adaption, and if Wright is able to stay true to the original story while also making it more palatable for wider audiences.

This was referred to me from a student as a foundational fiction piece. I can see where they are coming from. I saw elements of current dystopian novels in this story.

Very fun, fast read from King. You can tell he was having a blast writing this. Felt very relevant for today, the year this takes place.
I will say the casual racism running throughout was not necessary. Maybe once I get into 21st century King that goes away.
