So after I read Dissassembled I wanted something a little less intense. Ultimates was NOT the right choice for that, haha. I'm not sure what I was after, maybe happy fun team banter times, which this certainly has some of. In between all the wife-beating and Tony-has-cancer announcements.
I *really* liked this portrayal of Thor, which is like some kind of cross of the Don Blake alter ego and a militant hippy, and less "I SAY THEE NAY" and whatnot. Love it. He can be a Norse god without being all ridiculous, yes? (That sentence does not make sense. Oh well.)
Some people say that the only interesting thing Hank Pym ever did was beat his wife, which I didn't know was the case, I think 'can talk to ants' is a fairly tame super power given the larger Marvel universe. It was certainly a shocking moment between the Pyms, one I was definitely not ready for! You think "this comic doesn't have ANY Reed Richards in it, I am for definites safe from domestic violence" and then BOOM. Super jarring. Not sure where this story line is going to go, but amongst some problematic portrayals of women, this was done fairly sensitively actually.
Also. The Hulk. I'm afraid I am never going to find the whole metaphor for uncontrollable rage and the Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde thing very compelling, so I'm predisposed to not like him. I love love LOVE The Thing, so it's not like I'm all against huge dudes with image problems. I don't know how much of this Hulk is 'canon' but I could do with less threats of rape from the big green guy!
Hawkeye and Widow continue to be flawless, however, which surprises exactly no one. All it needs is a suuuuuper dark fucked up Winter Soldier plotline and I will be a happy (if not slightly troubled) fangirl.
