Maybe its really a 4.5 but I was captivated by the story of this woman's collective in Korea's JeJu Island. I learned so much much about the history of Korea (I also read Pachinko earlier this year). I highly recommend this book!

Such a great historical fiction. I learned a lot about Korea that I didn’t know before and intertwined into that was such a rich story of life. The stories of the haenyeo were fascinating, I had never heard of them prior to this story. The heartbreak was so profound I almost cried more than once. War seems to bring out the worst in people, or maybe just the worst people, and I was just so stricken by what happened. I can’t help but think I would have responded exactly like Young-sook did. How do you ever recover from something like that? I’m glad I read the story but I don’t think I could reread it.

It had a bit of a surprising end for me… another good Lisa See read.

Powerful and educational. I didn’t know any of the history surrounding haenyeo or Korea, so I learned a lot. Listening via Audible was helpful to make sense of it. I would have had a hard time following reading the text on my own.

a tale as old as time of friendship, betrayal, loss, family, and the role of women in society. in semi-matriarchal Jeju Island, the story of these two women is told through flashbacks and weaving through time to build a complex story that keeps twisting and turning. elaborate descriptions, clean prose, and the beautiful setting combine to weave a story that is as complex as it is stunning. i most definitely can see this being a novel that old women are interested in, given the content and the times that this is primarily set in. trigger warnings include graphic depictions of war, violence, murder, assault, and other war-time atrocities.
