The Island of Sea Women

This is a well written account of a woman’s life growing up as a diver on the Korean island of Jeju.
But listen...I had to take a break because there were some seriously not ok violent moments. It was hard to read.

men are the worst, colonizers are the worst, women's platonic and romantic love for each other is everything

I won’t lie, this was somewhat slow at times, but once I got into it I thought it was wonderful. It’s a thorough story of the haenyeo, a group of diving women in a matrifocal society on Jeju (an island off Korea). I learned a lot about Jeju and the haenyeo through this book, and while I was appalled by much of its history I canny deny that it makes a grand story. The heart of it all is the relationship between Young-sook, the narrator, and her best friend Mi-ja. Their connection is at times wonderful, others heartbreaking. I won’t go into too much detail because it’s best to let this story unfold on its own. -소피아

This was at points not an easy book to read, but it was well researched and well written, and definitely worth reading.

I am actually giving this 3.75 stars. The reason being that I felt it ran a bit long, otherwise I enjoyed this book. The life of the Haenyeo is fascinating and something I had no about. These women live a hard life, but their friendships are so unique. The main characters are beautiful in their friendship but also tragic.
