This is a delightful memoir told with Geena Davis' fabulous sense of humor and depth of feeling. She reads the audiobook with such earnestness, it's infectious (I even teared up when her voice cracked talking about her mother's passing away). The only complaint I have (and it's very minor) it is so short/quick!

Turns out, I can love Geena Davis more. In addition to her fantastic body of work in Hollywood, Geena has a knack for great storytelling, too. I enjoyed hearing about her experiences in her own words and learning more about her interests. This book satisfied the "recommended by friends" prompt on my 2023 reading challenge.

A local public radio newswoman did an interview with Geena Davis last week about this book and I was lucky enough not to have to wait at the library for a copy to read. While I have only watched some of Geena's movies, I got to see her speak at a local women's event in 2018 with Roxane Gay (who filled in for Gina Rodriguez). Two powerful women on that stage, and "Dying of Politeness" is the story of what it took for Geena to get there and how she is still working on being her authentic self. (Gay's memoir is even more stunning, "Hunger: A Memoir of [My] Body).")

In this memoir, Davis is funny. Writing in short sections, she speaks of her family of origin with love. For most of her career, the next work just came along. She can be particularly proud of the research done by her Institute on Gender in Media, making a difference beginning with children's TV and family movies so that girls and women are seen and have a variety of interests and career possibilities.

Absolutely wonderful. And I honestly laughed out loud the hardest when she talked about Mark Paul Gosslar joining the cast of Commander in Chief.

She is a very funny lady and now I must go re-watch Thelma and Louise.

Interested and fast-paced. Maybe a bit too concise? I did like her focus on being a people pleaser in a world that will take advantage of it and growing past it.
