I first picked up Illuminae in January of this year, so basically a lifetime ago. Memento was a surprise to me, but I bought the audiobook as soon as I could. Being transported back into a world that gripped me so strongly brought all my feelings about Illuminae back to the surface. For that, this book is nothing short of a 5/5.
Heartbreaking and joyous and intense and ominous. The incredible duo of Kaufman and Kristoff craft a world so unique and vivid, it'll not soon leave me. For those that haven't picked up Illuminae, please give it a try and eventually find your way to this story.

Happy five year anniversary Illuminae! Finally, the novella prequel Memento is available to us mere peasants that boarded the Illuminae train long after the preorder period had closed for the final book. It was worth the wait. I thought, how good could such a short novella really be? Really good, as it turns out.
Memento is a novella covering AIDAN's interactions with a young tech engineer, Olivia, whose job it is to develop AIDAN's personality processes. In just 80 pages we fall in love with her and her blossoming relationship with Major Wolf. We get goosebumps over her conversations with AIDAN. We side eye TF out of AIDAN beginning to refer to himself in the first person. And then we get nuked. And these two tyrant authors break your heart. AGAIN. It is a VERY wild 80 pages, let me just say.
Memento is a must read, but don't read it until after you've finished the Illuminae Files trilogy. It's a prequel but ties in so many things from the three full length novels.
Obviously five stars. Now give me more.
