I’ve read every Percy Jackson book so far, so of course I’m gonna read this one. But honestly, even compared to Chalice of the Gods, this one really is just fan service/advertising for the show.
It’s entertaining because it’s Rick Riordan and Percy Jackson, but that’s about it. The characters are so beloved but so flat in this one, like Uncle Rick didn’t bother with character growth/dynamic besides what he’s already written. He really leans into the “stereotype” of the characters that we already know—Annabeth is smart, Percy’s a goofball, Grover is nature focused. Not much beyond that.
Their adventures were what you’d expect for PJO in a good way. However, the humor made it hard to take it seriously because nearly every single paragraph/line had a punchline. I’m not joking (ironically), it got annoying. Even at the most high-intensity moments, Percy made cheesy jokes about the situation that just didn’t make the stakes feel high at all.
Do I regret reading it? No. Will I read the next one? Of course. Am I just slightly disappointed? … Yes.

So much fun, while I wouldn't recommend it to a non-pjo fan I loved it.

I love Rick's books. There's always a massive undertone of lessons he hides beneath his goofy writing and this book was no different. Had me smiling all night while I read it.
