Fern is about to leave Toronto to return home to her family's lakeside resort in Muskoka when she meets and spends 24 hrs with Will. Their lives are moving in different directions so they arrange to meet at the resort in 12 months' time, with no contact in between. When Will doesn't turn up the following year, Fern is heartbroken.
Fast forward 10 years and Fern is running the resort after her mother's unexpected death. Will unexpectedly arrives having been hired by Fern's mother to provide advice and direction for the resort. I understand why this novel was a Canada Reads Nominee (2024) and a Nominee for the Goodreads Choice Award (2022). It's a realistic 2nd chance romance following 2 people who met at a point when their lives were changing but they knew they had an incredible connection. The story also explores complex family dynamics, the anxiety and expectations that go along with them and two young people trying to navigate these issues. A great story with a wonderful summer feel, about two people trying to find their way back to each other.
