Beautifully written and just an incredible story. This is not the kind of book I usually gravitate toward, yet I was enthralled with the tale. The writing was so creative and the narrative utterly heart wrenching. Masterpiece of love and war.
It is a beautiful story of love and war with near perfect pacing.

One of the best war novels I’ve read. Jordan’s ruminations on war feel nuanced and real. I was hooked once I realized the entire plot would revolve around blowing up the bridge—one small action in the grand scope of war. Pilar is an unforgettable female character. The prose is enjoyable in its simplicity but is not as sparse as some of his other works.

I definitely would like this book more if Hemingway stopped fucking yarning about Maria’s boobs. “He had never thought that you could know that there was a woman if there was battle; nor that if there was a woman that she should have breasts small”????? SHUT UP!!!!!
Unfortunately, Hemingway is a good writer. He pops off best when he’s trying to evoke emotions—but unfortunately, that comes best when Robert Jordan and Maria are having sex. What is with this weirdo.
I didn’t know what this book was about so I was obviously surprised the 500 pages or so covered only four days. I don’t mind it because it feels like you really are just living this quasi-nothing life of almost three afternoons and three nights, but I can see why other people might not like it.
I have nothing really insightful or analytical to say about this book—white American man inserts himself in [insert here] issue, y’know. Book was still nice and I sort of enjoyed the faux Spanish in English thing Hemingway was trying. Probably wasted on me on a deeper level as know nothing about the Spanish war or about Spain. Robert Jordan was also mid, and I found Pilar and Pablo more compelling.
