Waiting in misery in the forest in the last scene, is how I felt after getting through this except instead of the officer Robert waits to shoot before his life runs out, I waited in agony to put this book out of its misery. I’m surprised I didn’t put myself out of my misery, literally or figuratively before completing this book. Thank obscenity God, it’s mucking over!

I love Hemingway's writing, so I'm biased. But if you also love Hemingway's writing, this is another 5-star read for you. If you haven't read Hemingway yet, why not start here?

I have become a bit of a hater on Hemingway's writing style as I have reread his novels as an adult (though as a person, I have always been fascinated by him). This novel has shifted my opinion, and while I still do not hold him in my personal list of great authors, I was very pleasantly surprised by his prose here, and I do not understand the monotony many other reviews complain of.
I have never like his dialogue, nor would I consider it one of his strong suits, but I do believe here it is leagues above his beginnings (i.e. The Sun Also Rises). Pilar proves he CAN write women, so it is specifically romantic interests that he cannot help but make into rather one-dimensional damsels in need of saving. Despite these flaws, I think Hemingway told a good story, and he did it in an interesting way (or at least interesting to me personally) - that is, by writing a story set in "real time." We spend every single moment of four days, for better or for worse, with Robert Jordan and his unlikely camp of guerrilla heroes, and you come to understand them, and even feel for them. It would only be natural for emotions to be at an all time high in times of war and distress, and I felt what they felt all along the way.
