I am not one for war epics, but even so I found this book incredibly boring. I couldn't muster sympathy for any of the characters except Maria, and only the last 30 pages or so really held my attention.

Beautiful small concise story which tells of people’s relationship with each other and with death. A snapshot of so many different emotions (love, fear, hate, trust, duty), the Spanish people, and the horrors of war on a personal level.
