I can see the argument that A Farewell to Arms is the better book because it doesn't romanticize war, but still I think this is my favourite. Blow that bridge!

Fwiw, I am new to Hemingway having watched the April PBS doc and feeling compelled to dive in. I read The Old Man and the Sea as it was airing, then this larger tomb in the weeks after.

I can’t quite put my finger on how Hemingway writes. I enjoyed this book a great deal, while trying to suppress my internal desire to “understand” the author or draw conclusions about why he is revered, whether I think him brilliant, etc. It’s a strange way to read a book. Combined with my lack of knowledge about how the Spanish Civil War unfolded, it was a slow read through the first half as I read and re-read, trying to use a work of fiction to learn some history while also serving as the decider of “Is Hemingway the best author?” for all humankind.

By the back half of the novel, I’d learned what I needed to about Spain in the 30’s (some via the book, but also thank-you Wiki) and I got over my fixation on judging Hemingway.

The result? A compelling and wonderful read. An improved appreciation for who and what Ernest Hemingway was. A desire to read more of his work (a short story collection the doc covered is next). He may not have climbed all the way to #1 on my Favorite Authors list, but I am better for having read his works and look forward to more.
