Savage Rivals was fun. It was a quick, relaxing, angst free read. Asher and Levi are captains of their respective football teams. Football meaning soccer, which I only figured out by use of the word “mate” for friend. Since Asher and Levi are in their senior year and no one mentions A levels – I’m going with Australia? There is not really a great sense of “place” in the story. Levi is the captain of the Richy Riches at Alstone High and Asher captains the working class Highnam Academy. The Highnam neighborhood is a bit dicey, hence Ash must carry his beloved Ruby – a red bladed knife which he likes to “introduce” his adversaries to (methinks someone watched GOT one time too many). Highnam Academy and Alstone High gave been longstanding football rivals; but things really heat up when the animosity (based on misunderstandings) between Ash and Levi starts spreading through their teams and spilling over outside of the football field.
Asher and Levi have a definite attraction to each other right from the beginning although both deny it, and both are horrified by it. Levi has suspected he may be, at a minimum bi – but not ASHER! Ash has never thought about his orientation, but he can acknowledge that Levi is hot. He’s not horrified that he’s attracted to a guy; he’s horrified that it’s Levi. There are great secondary characters in the form of their respective friends and it’s kind of funny that their friends suspect the attraction well before they do and when things finally come to light, no one is surprised. It’s fun to watch Ash and Levi get to know one another and challenge their misconceptions; but they also seem to fall together and go straight to lovey-dovey a little too easily. For 2 guys who hated each other, weren’t sure of a same sex relationship and enjoy beating the shit out of each other, they have a shockingly healthy, stable and mature relationship.
Savage Rivals takes place in senior year of high school, both characters are 18 and their parents for the most part are MIA – and very heavy sleepers since none of them know when people are traipsing in and out of their homes. There is also a very implausible, adult sanctioned, well known fight club for high school students run out of a skatepark – that doesn’t scream liability and lawsuit at all.
There is a definite HEA and the epilogue is really sweet.

4.25. This was a really delightful read! I really liked the dynamic between the two MCs and that their attraction was always a bit of an undercurrent in their animosity for each other. Considering the way this book played out, the level of angst was pretty low - but in a way that felt right and made the reading experience more enjoyable.
