Took me a while to get into this series as it does have heavy attention to politics which I'm usually not interested in. However this book did it right (although took me a minute sometimes to wrap my head around what was going on - not by fault of the writer). The world is absolutely magical, very detailed and creative characters with great descriptions. Lots of plot twists, bit of a rollercoaster but in a good way! The characters have fabulous development through the story. The queen of nothing wrapped up the series very well.

“By you, I am forever undone.”

“We have lived in our armor for so long, you and I. And now I am not sure if either of us knows how to remove it.”

"How do people like us take off our armor?
One piece at a time."

"Only out of his spilled blood can a great ruler rise."

I struggled so much with this rating. I was between a 3 and a 4 but ultimately decided on 4 stars because of my investment in the series and how much I smiled when I closed this book that I have held dearly in my heart for so many years and will likely read again and again.

Likes:
I really think Black did an excellent job tying up the end of the book and the trilogy.
The dynamic between Madoc and Jude was extremely entertaining and I loved seeing how two equally cunning people played mind games with each other. And you know, struggled with their conflicting feelings of admiration, love, and hatred.
The relationship between Cardan and Jude was really healthy in this book lol. It should have been a given but it’s been a rocky road.

Dislikes:
I was confused by the Cardan that came out in this book. Not to say I didn’t enjoy him ~spicy~ but he really took a 180 and I didn’t get to see that progression in the book. Now *supposedly* there are some extra scenes in the B&N exclusive that showcase all of his tumultuous feels but I think those emotions should have been included in the story itself

It took me...a long time to get through this book, and it might be a me problem because I hate finishing series (if I don’t finish the series it will never be over in my head?) but I think the book had a bit of a pacing problem. It could have stood to be a little faster in book 1 and a lot slower in book 2.
