Well written and well constructed, very well researched. Ultimately I think what the book promises vs what it delivers as well as what the scope is/ what it’s able to achieve is what makes this a murkier rating. It should be advertised more as a true crime book bc it’s more about the intersection of the rise and fall of the KKK with a major criminal trial of one of its major leaders.

The book advertises this as a one woman crusade to take down the KKK which makes this book sound more like social justice / fighting against racism but the woman in question is literally a victim of the KKK and its culture and though her dying words help convict, it’s not really a take down of the KKK by any means.

So this is a well written book about the KKK more generally and if you like true crime but it’s not really what you’d expect.

Holy fucking shit this is a must-read.

“I did not sell the klan to Indiana on hatreds. I sold it on Americanism” — DC Stephenson

I’m not the first to point this out but DC Stephenson sounds an awful lot like Trump, they’re at least working from the same playbook. I laughed out loud when Stephenson blamed his conviction on a conspiracy by “low-intelligence individuals”.

Unbelievably disgusting that kkk was so active after the civil war(never knew that), and disturbing that DC Stephenson seems just like Trump.
