Egan chronicles the rise of the second kkk with a focus on DC Stephenson, leader in the north and his egregious history of violence towards women that ultimately brought him down in the murder trial of Madge Oberholtzer.
A extremely dark chapter of Indiana history

As a lifelong Hoosier born and raised in Indianapolis, this one hit close to home. As an American in 2024, it also hits close to home. There are countless similarities between this story’s villain, DC Stephenson, and the villain that almost 77 million Americans just elected President. I hope our story ends the same way this one did, and we’re able to wipe our hands clean of charlatans like Donald Trump who bring out the worst in people through fear-mongering and hate.
