I read everything Rosie Danan writes!

I’m particularly enjoying her foray into supernatural romances, tho I will say I don’t love them as much as her contemporaries. I do enjoy that she is clearly grappling with a large question in each of them, in this case: fandom. How do we interact with popular culture as a fan, consuming fan fiction, when are lines crossed, what does it means for the actors/actresses playing these roles, the ethical quandaries of child acting, etc. This book doesn’t attempt to solve this large of a topic but it does show each protagonist grappling with these questions in their own roles in perpetuating them: as the lead actor and as the lead fandom expert.

Book 100 of 2025 finished 16/9/25 ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

He used to play a werewolf on TV. Now he might be one.

Alex Lawson is a small town outcast who only feels at home on the fan forum she built for The Arcane Files, a cult werewolf detective show. So when the show’s former star, Devin Ashwood, shows up in her inbox claiming he’s turning into a real werewolf, she figures it’s a hoax.

Desperate and spiraling, Devin makes her a deal: help him survive the next full moon, and he’ll help her pay her dad’s medical bills. But as fangirl and fallen star dive into a world of moonlit secrets and myths, things get a little too personal. And getting close to a werewolf? That might just come back to bite her.

My thoughts: paranormal romcom, small town, found family, opposites attract, age gap (M42, F34).

Alex is such a loveable main character she’s strong, feisty, fiercely loyal to her friends, but still stuck in the habit of letting people make her feel small. Enter Devin, I didn’t like him at first, but he (and the wolf!) are completely gone for Alex. Watching her slowly take control while he basically worships the ground she walks on had me kicking my feet. She had him eating out of the palm of her hand and it was exquisite.

The internal back and forth between Devin and his wolf was so well done, and the chemistry between him and Alex was on fire!

There are A LOT of pop culture references (a little too many for my taste) but if you grew up obsessed with Teen Wolf, Twilight, or The Vampire Diaries, this book will feel like coming home. It’s smart, spicy, and full of love for fandom.
